Fans of the Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team can get their first look at the 2024 team went the Flames welcome Austin Valor to a scrimmage at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.

The event is at Britton Field on the Faith campus.

The scrimmage will have a controlled portion, which means each offense is guaranteed a double-digit number of plays in a row, no matter the outcome. Then it will have a live quarter. Officials will work the event.

“We have 19 (players), they have 24,” head coach Jay Silvers said. “We can do three or four rounds of (the controlled scrimmage).”

The number of athletes on each roster isn’t the only similarity, he added. Both teams are learning how to play together in an unfamiliar system.

While Silvers has been in the program for about four years, he was the defensive coordinator. He became the head coach a few months ago and took over as offensive coordinator. His scheme combines the power run with the spread offense and tries to intermix the best parts of both. The Flames are still learning.

“(Valor) is in the same boat,” he said. “They’re a pretty young team. Our junior varsity played them three years ago. They were just starting up. We’re probably going to be pretty similar.”

The goal is not to win the scrimmage, he said. It’s to ensure each Flame knows his role on each play, and coaches will save their elaborate plays for opponents when games count toward the win-loss column.

“I want to make sure we can do our basic stuff,” he said. “Other stuff we’ll save for Pasadena First Baptist (in the season opener Aug. 30). I’m still putting people in different spots. I have an idea of which guys will go where. I want to make sure.”
